  2. Happy Thanksgiving! Flat Corey visited new and old friends in Florida this past week. We hope he had a great time in the warm sunshine. Lion Country Safari was a blast, the new baby rhino was the best part! Can't wait to see where he'll go next. Remember to get enough sleep with all your adventures!

  3. Hi Flat Daniel! I can't wait to begin our journey today. First we're off to Logan Airport in Boston and then to Princeton, NJ for a business meeting [please try to stay awake, at least when my bosses are in the room, ok?]. We'll have to see where you end up next, or maybe I will keep you for myself and bring you back home for more adventures, HMMMM...

  4. Hi Flat Grace, It almost snowed in New Orleans last night! Can you believe that. Two weeks ago we almost had a hurricane! After you were left with Aunt Glo and Uncle Saint for a week Aunt Bobbie picked you up and took you to the French Quarter; maybe for cafe au lait and beingnets? Hope it warms up soon. Go Saints!!!!

  5. Hi Flat Daniel! Well, we're back from our trip to New Jersey and I hope you had fun. You had a chance to meet all of my coworkers, got a short tour of Princeton University (yes, there are a lot of smart people there), and you got to learn about all of the medicines that I get to work with (but shhh, you have to keep all the secrets you learned about to yourself :-)) I do have to say that the best part of the whole trip was when you got to meet the pilots, and they even LET YOU FLY THE PLANE!!! I know your classmates won't believe you when you tell them, so I will make sure that I send the pictures along in your journal. Well, we're off to the heart of Yankee country, New York City this week, but don't worry, I will let them know that you are a Red Sox fan. I am sure that we'll get to see plenty of good sights there. Have a great week at school!

  8. Flat Abigail arrived yesterday in Sunnyvale, California. Sunnyvale is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. It is one of the major cities that make up the Silicon Valley.

The city is bordered by the San Francisco Bay and portions of San Jose to the north, Moffett Federal Airfield to the northwest, Mountain View (home of Google) to the west, Los Altos to the southwest, Cupertino to the south, and Santa Clara to the east. It lies along the historic El Camino Real and Highway 101.

As part of the Silicon Valley, Sunnyvale is headquarters to several high-tech companies such as Maxim Integrated Products, Juniper Networks, Palm, Inc., AMD, NetApp, Spansion, Yahoo!, Mirapoint, and Ariba. Sunnyvale is also home to several aerospace/defense companies; Lockheed Martin has a major facility in Sunnyvale, and Honeywell, Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems - Marine Systems (location of the Hendy Iron Works Museum), and Spirent Communications also have offices in Sunnyvale. Sunnyvale is also the home to Onizuka Air Force Station, where its main building, locally known as the Blue Cube, is its most prominent feature. The base, named for the deceased Space Shuttle Challenger astronaut Ellison Onizuka, is the primary artificial satellite control facility of the United States armed forces.

Sunnyvale is one of the few U.S. cities to have a single unified Department of Public Safety, where all personnel are trained as firefighters, police officers, and EMTs, so they can respond to an emergency in any of the three roles.

  9. Flat Grace came to visit Grace Collin's aunt Bobbie in New Orleans. I loved learning about this project. So, Flat Grace visited the French Quarter, where I live. Grace mentioned that she hoped that Flat Grace could visit lots of different places. One place she mentioned was Australia. I have a good friend who lives in the French Quarter near me. Her name is Rebecca. I passed Flat Grace on to her. I hope she is having fun. Good luck to all of the travelers.

  10. Jamie, it's Dad. Flat Jamie and I spent the week in St. Louis, Missouri this week. It's been quite an adventure so far. I took a picture of us at the Saint Louis Arch. The Arch is 630 feet tall and is the tallest US natonal monument. Maybe you and your classmates can look up some other facts about it.

The week was busy but Flat Jamie was with me every step of the way. In fact, I brought her on stage with me when I presented to a group of 100 financial advisors. She also came to all of my client dinners and meetings.

I know that I'm supposed to pass Flat Jamie off to someone else...but I'm not ready just yet...

    Love, Dad

  11. Flat Daniel joined his dad and two friends from college for some tasty BBQ in New York City. It was great to hear about this project, and I think that Flat Daniel now has a favorite food in BBQ, especially the "super fries". Flat Daniel also enjoyed meeting some of dad's old friends.

  12. Flat James has had a busy month so far. He has been in Omaha Nebraska visiting Nebraska Furniture Mart and seeing the new baseball staduin where they will play the NCAA College world series for baseball next year. NFM is similar to Jordans furniture except 6 times as big.
Then James went to Denver Colorado to experience a snow storn, see Invesco field where the Denver Broncos football team plays, and visit another furniture company. He is now on his way to INDIA. A long long flight!

  13. Flat Daniel was out in New York City last night with his Dad, and Dad's college buddies, Sweet Daddy Lubo and PJ. Flat Daniel was understandably overwhelmed at the beginning of the meal by the amount of bbq surrounding him, but he got to see the professionals at work. Now Flat Daniel doesn't need to eat for a few days.

  14. Hi Daniel. Well, Flat Daniel and I are back from our trip to Long Island and New York City. We walked all around New York City and got to see Penn Station, the Macy Store where the Thanksgiving Day Parade goes by, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, and the giant Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center. We also had some meetings over in Brooklyn and got to see the famous Brooklyn Bridge. Did you know that Manhattan Island is made up of granite rock? No wonder they can build all those tall buildings there! We also got to have dinner with my college friends PJ and Lubo. We had your favorite, BBQ, and I think Flat Daniel enjoys it too :-). All in all, it was a fun trip and Flat Daniel learned a lot. Next week it is back to New Jersey and then I will pass Flat Daniel off to some friends so he can explore other parts of this great country. Have a great weekend and say hi to your class for me!

  15. Flat Daniel's Dad's Co-workerDecember 11, 2009 at 4:33 PM

So I was lucky enough to spend time with Flat Daniel in Princeton AND in NYC, where I live/work, thanks to his dad. Apparently he had more social engagements in NYC than I usually do, had several photo shoots plus had an awesome BBQ meal (I'm jealous...and hungry). Unfortunately he had to sit through a couple of business meetings...he slept through the first (smart move) but was wide awake for the second (because it once again involved food...and a berry smoothie..hence the purple stain on his shirt). We had an interesting trip back to the airport, braving the NYC traffic and making several u-turns (though he may not remember as he had his eyes covered...again smart move). This may in part explain why, in his last NYC pic outside the Delta terminal, he looks a little pale. Was great to meet you Flat Daniel!!! Happy Traveling!!

  16. Hi Flat Maddy. Maddy's Dad had to go to Asia on business so Flat Maddy got to go. First we flew to JFK in New York. From there we flew to Tokyo in Japan. Lots of meetings but we ate tongue and sushi. Yum. Next we flew to Beijing in China where we went to the Forbidden City. Tomorrow, we will fly to Singapore. From there, who knows where Flat Maddy goes next? Australia maybe?

  17. OK I've got Flat Kevin Z with me.
So far Kevin Z's been to Japan & China with Kevin's aunt & uncle. They must know my friend Jerrica because Flat Kevin is now with me in Sarajevo! I bet no other Flat4thGrader has been to Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina. We might stay here for a white Christmas.. lemme see if I can post a picture of Flat Kevin having brunch with me in Shanghai (where I adopted him)

  18. This is Real Kevin Z's uncle. We have some photos of Flat Kevin Z visiting some of the sights in Kyoto, Japan, and also visiting with RK's family in Guangzhou. After that we went to Shanghai where we introduced Flat Kevin Z to Jerrica, and now we see he's made a long hop to Sarajevo. I wonder where he'll go next??

  20. Flat Nicole and JC

Hello all: Flat Nicole and myself were introduced in Paris the first week of December, and the, we wrote a postcard, which we hope arrives to Killam Elementary School.

After a couple of days snowing in Paris, we tried to search for ggod time and some sun, so we started a trip to the south of Spain.

We arrived to Malaga (a city with a great view of Mediterranean see) the 24th of December. That night, families in Spain have a old, very old tradition, Christmas Eve, and they get together to have dinner (but we think families in USA do the same). And there is another tradition, because families make a Belen, a representation of the birth of Baby Jesus. I have a picture in one Belen.

Ahhhh, we were very unlucky, do you remember when we said we were looking for good time? We have been in the beach for 2 days, raining all the time, and we have not seen the sun even one minute.

Therefore I have a great picture of the beach, with the Mediterranean sea behind us, but as you can see, it is cloudy, uhmm, what will happen in the future?
Will we see the sun one day?

    Kisses to everyone
    Flat Nicole and JC

  21. Hello again from Flat Nicole and JC again:

We have talked to the postman, and he told us that the postcard with a picture of Eiffel Tower is in its way to Killam Elementary School, but he told us that they had to send it with a Spanish stamp (very nice stamp, by the way)

After being in the beach, Flat Nicole and myself went to the harbour, because we saw a wooden boat from the seventeeth century, the Santisima Trinidad, She was the largest ship in the world when built.

If you want to see Flat Nicole and the ship

    Bye

  22. Flat Eileen spent all of Christmas week in Washington, DC. On Day One, she visited the Lincoln Memorial, all the war memorials (World War II, Korea and Vietnam) and the Washington Monument. It was really cold because we got 18 inches of snow the day before.

On Day Two, Flat Eileen visited the American History Museum where she saw lots of cool things like President Lincoln's top hat, Dorothy's ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz, fancy dresses worn by the First Ladies, and a really old camper from the 1960s. She also got to see the original Star Spangled Banner flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem that later became the U.S. National Anthem. This anthem is sung before every Red Sox game. Can you tell Flat Eileen what other times we sing this anthem?

On Day Three, she visited the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing and saw how money gets made. Did you know that this Bureau only makes paper money? Coins are made at the U.S. Mint also located in DC with other branches in New York, California, Pennsylvania and Colorado. This building is so secure they would not allow Flat Eileen to take any photographs with her camera. She also went to the Natural History Museum and saw the Hope Diamond along with lots of other gemstones and minerals. Her friend Grace told us that the Killam Fourth Graders were studying minerals this year.

On Day Four, Flat Eileen visited Arlington National Cemetery and saw the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The guards walk by the Tomb and click their heels together with much precision. A guard has been on duty at the Tomb continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since July 2, 1937.

On Day Five, Flat Eileen celebrated Christmas with her new friends. What an exciting week she had! I wonder where she'll go next?

    Signed,
Flat Eileen's New Friend Trish Collins

  23. Hello all:

As Malaga was very cold, Flat Nicole and myself drove to Cadiz. All the way is along the Mediterranean Sea in one side, and the mountains in the other side.

At one point, we went uphill a little bit to take a nice picture.

    http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=136130&id=519202658&saved#/album.php?aid=136130&id=519202658

Suddenly, we were arriving to Tarifa, and we could see some land at the other side of the sea. So we asked what was that land? and they told us it was Morroco, Africa, unbelievable, we were in one continent (Europe), and we could see Africa.

It was very windy, but Flat Nicole made a picture of Africa. By the way, how big do you think Mediterranean Sea is? How many countries are bathed for the Mediterranean Sea? Less than 5? between 5 and 10? between 10 and 20? more than 20? I told Flat Nicole that 2000 years ago (long time ago), all those countries belonged to the Roman Empire. Maybe you have seen some movies about the romans, as Gladiator. We will talk about the romans again some other day.

We bought a postcard and gave to a postman that was riding his bicycle in that place. It will arrive to Killam Elementary School next week if we are lucky.

After the emotion of seeing Africa, we continued aour way to Cadiz, what places will we see in Cadiz? Was Cadiz a Roman city as well? We will give this information in future chapters.

    Regards
    JC

  24. Hi this is Flat Sierra. On December 26th I traveled to West Simsbury CT for a one night visit, then traveled on to Boyds, MD to visit with a family with a 8 year old boy named Mathieu and a 5 year old boy named Ryan. They have a very fun beagle named Skittles. They live very close to Washington DC, so today I went to see the Terra Cota warriors at the National Geographic museum Very cool! We visited the National Christmas tree and even saw the Massachusetts State tree, the White House and the Washington Monument. We were all very tired of walking, but I got some cool pictures! I can't wait to see where I go next.

  25. Flat Kevin (the one with a pet dog named Bella) spent Christmas in Sacramento California with the Patel family and is now back on the East coast in Atlanta, GA with the Mathur family where he spent New Year's. So far the highlight of his holidays has been the variety of food! He has also made friends with a 2 yr old named Nishan and a 3 month old named Maxwell. I think he likes these kids mainly because they are not much bigger than him :)

In Atlanta, he had a chance to play video games, eat rice krispies treats, homemade pizza with East Indian spiced veggies, drink lots of hot chocolate and even tried Persian food at a restaurant. For the New Year's celebration while everyone had champagne, he and his sender, Ritesh sipped on cherry 7up in fancy glasses.

He is headed to Charlotte North Carolina today and looks forward to his next sender!

  26. Hello Rachael and fellow 4th Graders at J.W. Killiam Elementary School!

Flat Rachael had an exciting week here in Vermont. Flat Rachael went skiing with me at Killington. Killington is the largest ski resort in New England. It was very c-c-c-cold! Brrrr. But Flat Rachael stayed nice and warm in the ski patrol hut, where I work as a ski patroller. We went out on three calls Monday. We helped a man with a hurt back and we took a girl down the mountain in our rescue toboggan because the ski trail was too difficult for her (I took a picture of Flat Rachael in the ski patrol rescue toboggan, which I will share with you later.) The third person we went out to help was gone before we got there! I guess she was OK after all. I can't wait to take the real Rachael out skiing at Killington again. She did great last year and I know she'll do even better this year. I hope Flat Rachael enjoys the rest of her travels.

So long now, from Uncle Kyle and Auntie Lynne

  28. Hello, this is Flat Daniel from the majestic "tundra" of North Dakota! Yes, there is a state named North Dakota and I discovered there is one named South Dakota too.

I was invited to spend time with a very friendly family named the Hoedls. They are very hardy people and enjoy all seasons - especially winter! I will be posting a YouTube of my adventures here when I get back from Disney World. Yes, I did say DISNEY WORLD!

After spending a festive holiday ("Christmas" in the Hoedl household) season with the Hoedls, including a trip to the northwoods of northern Minnesota, they invited me to join them on their family trip to Disney World! AWESOME!

The father of the family is running in the Disney World Half-Marathon AND Marathon - I'm going to see if I can ask to join him on his run. That would be too cool! They leave today with me, which is good as the temperatures here are -24 degrees. Yes, you read that right. It's a NEGATIVE 24 degrees here and these people in North Dakota still survive. In fact, they love this weather! I experienced two blizzards since I've been here, so it's time for warmer weather...

I will type more later, but right now I've got to get into Mr. Hoedl's carry-on luggage for the flight to balmy Florida. More later!

A big shout-out to my special buddy back there, Daniel Baker! I miss you but I'm having a blast traveling around the United States. See you soon!

  29. Hey Flat Fourth Graders!

Flat Meri here. I have been having a blast over the holidays with the Aunt and Uncle of my friend Meri Taylor. So far we've been to San Francisco, California. For Christmas, we drove all the way down to Disneyland near Los Angleles. Because afterall, if you make it all the way to California, you gotta go see Mickey, right? Then we spent New Years in a Calgary Alberta Canada. And you thought Massachusetts was cold in the winter. Wow. Little pop quiz: it was the same temperature measured in either Centigrade or Fahrenheit. How cold was it?

Not sure where we're off to next, but I'll keep you posted.

  30. Flat Abigail has been having many adventures. She was sent off to the UK for a business trip and had to change planes in France. The French often have labor disputes and go on strike. As a result Flt Abigail was very late to her destination. Once she arrived, it was sadly with only one eye! We're hoping the hotel has glue to help set Flat Abigail right. In the meantime Flat Abigail has been doing some one-eyed sight seeing!

We saw many skyscrapers including the Sears Tower (now called the Willis Tower), and the John Hancock Building. We had to stay bundled up because it was cold! Chicago is right on Lake Michigan, which is one of the five great lakes. Flat Eileen and I also had some deep dish pizza for which Chicago is famous. Flat Eileen is excited to see where she goes next.

  33. Hi Brian, sorry I haven't posted anything to the web-site sooner. On Nov 28th Flat Brian wen with Uncle Dave and Auntie Trisha to Boston's Logan International Airport. We were ultimately going to land in New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans is the capital of Louisiana. Our fist stop was in O'Hare International Airport. Chicago is the capital of Illinois. We landed in New Orleans and the firs thing we did was to go to a birthday party for Max, this is Uncle Daves nieces husband. There were a lot of people and lots of interesting food. We visited with other family members and then on Monday Nov. 30th we went to the Superdome to watch the Patriots play the Saints. As you know the Patriots lost. Boo hoo! The last day we met Uncle Daves nephew, Ed, and he was going to give Flat Brian to his wife Robin. Robin was scheduled to go on a business trip to Georgia. It will be interesting to see where he lands next.

  34. Hello All:

Flat Sam has returned from his fantastic trip to India over the holidays. He had a great time staying with the Patel family in the village of Vanzna in the state of Gujarat (about a 5 hour drive from Mumbai). He enjoyed eating India food, especially all the fresh Indian fruit that was in season at the time, such as sitafal, bore, papaya, guava, sapodilla, etc. Flat Sam attended all of the Patel family village Indian wedding ceremonies. He also got to visit two major cities in the state of Gujarat, Surat and Daman, whilst in India. Flat Sam really enjoyed the hot over 100 degrees weather!

She also took photos with mermaids that they have placed around the Downtown area. Next she got to take a trip to Naval Air Station Oceana where she got to go to the Naval Air History Museum. She took many photos with actual Navy Jets such as the Blue Angles and the Raging Bulls. Then Ana went bowling with Patrick and Rebecca. Ana has also spent a day at the Marine Corps Security Force Regiment with Sgt. Patrick Knott. She went around and saw all the historical documents the Regiment has posted around its building. 41. Hola! Flat Eileen and I had such a great time in sunny Puerto Rico. We both got to leave our winter coats behind, as the temperature was in the mid 80s every day! Puerto Rico is a beautiful tropical island in the Carribean surrounded by sandy white beaches and clear blue waters. And the ocean is warm, and FULL of colorful fishies (like Nemo) and other interesting sea life. We saw lots of shells and cute hermit crabs as we walked along the beach. Flat Eileen even picked one up and he crawled on her hand. It tickles! tee-hee. Oh, and coconuts, too. There are lots of palm trees. There is also a little frog in Puerto Rico called The Coqui. You hear them a lot at night, as they love to sing. But it's only the male coquies that do the singing. They begin to sing when the sun goes down at dusk, singing all night long until dawn. It's hard to find them, since they hide in the grass and trees, but it's really fun to fall asleep hearing their soothing chirps. We had a really nice time and hope to get back to the island soon. Hasta Luego!

While there, he had a lobster roll (the best ever) and made a quick trip to the beach becasue the beuatiful coast of Maine has got to be seen no matter how cold it is outside! He even got a "wheresgeorge.com" bill at the Maine toll booth! when he tracked it on their website...he learned that his 10.00 bill has been traveling for 5 years, 214 days and 21 hours (333 miles)! Whew...and Flat James thought HE was tired after his trips to India and Turkey! What he learned in Maine:

~it's the largest state in New England
~if you travel all the way North you'll end up in Canada!
~His Aunite Mimi is Franco-Amercian and grew up only speaking French!
~It's very cold there in the winter!

  44. Hello everybody:

It has been a long time since Flat Nicole and myself left the last message, and we were looking forward to write the latest news.

We left in th eway to Cadiz (uou can see new pictures at
    http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=136130&id=519202658&saved)

As usual, it was very windy, and you can see how Flat Nicole could not stay combed. Beind us you can see the walls. Cadiz is probably one of the oldest city in Europe, with many thousands of years of history. In this city lives the fenicians, the greeks, and the romans.

As a matter of fact you have 2 new pictures of a Roam Theather( it was discovered when I was a litthe boy). In the first picture you can see the old entrance. We know it is not a huge door, but just keep in mind it was done 2000 years ago, but.........take a look at the seats!! they are even better than some theathers today.

Could you just close your eyes and travel in time back 2000 years? open your eyes and imagine you are seated in those seats surrounded by some people watching a play, almost like today.

We leave you today with this Roman Theather's history

    Roman theatre
In 1980, in the El Pópulo district of Cádiz, there was a fire in some old warehouses belonging to a company called Vigorito, SA, causing catastrophic damage. In the aftermath of the fire, an exciting discovery was made: the remains of an ancient Roman theatre. The fire had destroyed the warehouses revealing a layer of construction that was judged to be the foundations of some medieval buildings; the foundations of these buildings had been built, in turn, upon much more ancient stones, hand-hewn limestone of a Roman character. Systematic excavations, which still continue, have revealed a largely intact Roman theatre

The theatre, constructed by order of Lucius Cornelius Balbus (minor) during the first century BCE, is the second largest Roman theatre in the world, surpassed only by the theater of Pompeii, south of Rome. Cicero, in "Epistulae ad Familiares" (Letters to his friends), wrote of its use by Balbo for personal propaganda.

According to archaeologists, this discovery confirms the greatness of the Roman city of Gades. The ancient city had a population even greater than the 80,000 people who lived in Cádiz during the sixteenth and seventeenth century, when the city dominated trans-Atlantic commerce, and it was one of the most prosperous cities of the Roman empire.

    Cheers everyone

Tomorrow we will talk about the Cathedral. Do you think it was made by the Romans?

  45. Hi to all my FlatFourthgrader friends,

I have had the pleasure to travel a bit this last month with my Aunt Lynne and Uncle Kyles friend Peggy. She was traveling to Atlanta, Georgia to help her parents transition to Assisted Living. It was not going to be fun but I was really interested in what that means Assisted Living? Before I go into that I did want to tell you about my flight down.

The night before our big airplane ride we had a great dinner at Peggy and Joes house in Vermont. They had a roaring fire because it was bitterly cold. And I was able to meet their niece Anna, who is living with them for the winter. I think she was trying to be a 'ski bum' which I thought was a cool idea! She has been working in Uganda, South Africa for a few years teaching young women to kayak and take care of their health care needs. I found her stories very interesting and I would like her to write in my Flat Journey's blog even if I don't make it to Africa this year.

On Monday morning Peggy and I got on the road from Stockbridge, VT to drive to Boston. Living in Stockbridge, VT you are 2 hours from the nearest airport and Peggy likes to fly out of Boston since they have many more in and out flights to Georgia than the local airports. It was a beautiful clear day outside and our trip went smoothly. We spent the night in Boston, "Bean Town" where we were able to reorganize our packing. Our flight out to Atlanta was to be at 9:45am on Tuesday. When we got to the airport Peggy had a really neat idea. She asked me if I wanted to go in the suitcase that was to be transported under the plane or come with me in the passenger section? Given my curiosity I chose to go on the tour of Baggage Transport.

So I climbed on in to Peggys rolling suitcase, nestled in between two warm sweaters! At check in I was lifted and placed on a rolling cart which went through a fancy electronic screening process. All of a sudden a bright light appeared and everything around me including me was visible. I learned alot on this adventure. Especially the following:

Everyone who travels by air goes through airport security checkpoints. These checkpoints are operated by Transportation Security Officers from the Transportation Security Administration.

The checkpoints are there to make sure that people can’t bring anything aboard the plane that would enable them to take it over or destroy it. These are called “prohibited items” and cannot be brought to a checkpoint, into the secure area of an airport, or aboard an aircraft.

Not only do all passengers go through checkpoints, their checked baggage is also screened. This may happen out of passengers' view depending on the physical configuration at each airport.

We passed the test with flying colors. Although, the flight we were on was delayed for 2 hours due to weather issues coming out of the west and this trip that should have been a 2 1/2 hour flight turned in to 5 hour trip! So by the time I was released from under the plane and placed on the belt to send me up and out for Peggy to pick me up, I was starving!

Atlanta was neat cause we were able to ride the MARTA train from the airport all the way out to Sandy Springs. The train ride takes you throught the city. So I will write more about that! I need to eat something now.

  46. Hi again friends,

To continue my adventure in Georgia. Peggy and I went to St. Georges Village in Roswell where her parents live. They have lived in Independent Living for 5 years now and say they love it because they are around alot of happy, helpful and loving people. Peggy's parents just turned 80 this year and find that living in a retirement village is quite nice. They have given up on taking care of a large home and big yard. They get cleaning service, fine dining, pool, spa, gym and lots of great entertainment. Here is the link if you want to read more about St. George's Village. http://www.stgeorgevillage.com

Peggy's visit was a mix of happy and sad because her Mom, Ginny who has a memory issue was going to be transfering to the Assisted Living Section of St. Geroge's. Peggy and her family knows that it will eventually be a very good thing but having her go through this change was going to be hard and will take time for her to get used to it. The assisted living side of the building offers lots of professional staff like Communications Therapist, Activity Therapist and Physical Therapist to help her Mom remain active and keep her memory as good as it can be.
This link tells you about Assited Living.
    http://www.stgeorgevillage.com/healthservices.html
For the first two days Peggy and her sisters worked around the clock to get her new apartment decorated with all that Ginny loves; her art work, (in her younger years Peggy's Mom did water colors and paintings as well as needle point), family pictures and furniture.

When you have memory issues in your older years it is comforting to have reminders of the past and make sure the present is similar so she can be comfortable and easily find all her belongings each day. Her room is very nice and colorful! She was really a good artist and it was fun to talk with her about her art and her family. I even got to meet her granddaughters who went to water aerobics with them, had a delicious buffet in the main dinning room and we got to have dinner at Peggy's sisters newly renovated cottage in Roswell with her whole family!

Peggy tells me that her Mom and Dad are adjusting to the changes. She is now sharing her art with all the other residents and staff.

I am glad there are facilities like this available and as my parents and I grow older I hope that they continue to improve on these facilities and make them more readily available.

Next story will be about the Killington Medical Clinic where Peggy works. I had a fantatstic time and learned alot with my Uncle Kyle as a Ski Patroller and the Killington Medical Clinic is available for those skiers or riders who need more than first aide. Can't wait to see how that works!

  48. Hi flat friends,

I forgot to tell you all about my visit to the Atlanta, Georgia Aquarium!!! I was able to take a behind the scenes tour.

Visit the top of the live coral reef exhibit where you will discover the secrets of the tropical waters and mangrove forest, located above Tropical Diver.
Observe where the Aquarium team cares for the animals and prepares their food as you visit the Commissary and Veterinary Clinic.
Enjoy the view at the top of the largest ocean exhibit in North America (Ocean Voyager, built by The Home Depot), and observe the world’s largest fish, the whale shark, as it swims below you.

I know that all of you would love to see this large and beautiful Aquarium!!!

Georgia not only has alot of people with southern accents but many wonderful sights to see! Like the Coco Cola Plant, Underground Atlanta and old Southern villages with amazing food. I do believe I like grits, especially with cheese!!

Next time I will talk about the Killington Medical Clinic!

  49. Flat Jamie has driven 5-1/2 hours to Narrowsburg, NY with her Auntie Jenn and Cousin Ryan. Where is this you ask? Well it is a small town in Sullivan County, super close to Pennsylvania. Today we went down to the Delaware River to look for bald eagles on the eddy. I think it was a bit to cold for them to be out today! Tomorrow she will come to school with me to teach art at Eldred Jr.-Sr. High School. I'll let you know how it goes...

Singapore is a tiny island off the tip of the Malaysian peninsula. It is very very hot here, as it is only one degree north of the equator. So Flat Chris was really warm, but he survived and is happy to be back now in the USA. Thanks for sharing Flat Chris with me. We will send a post card soon!

Luckily having originated in MA, Flat Caitlin is used to the unusual cold weather D.C. has experienced the past few weeks. There was so much snow that plows from Massachusetts had to come down to help! She is now headed to New York City for another adventure!

  54. Flat Abigail is "down under" in Sydney Australia. Once again she's traveling with only a "good eye". Flat Abigail seems to have issues with her eyes. She's winking at the world!

Here are descriptions of the pictures of Flat Abigail's journey:
The first picture was taken from the Blue Mountains in Katoomba in front of one of the most famous rock formations in Australia known as the three sisters.

    Here is the legend
The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, 'Meehni', 'Wimlah' and Gunnedoo' lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe. These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry. The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle.
As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come.

  55. More descriptions to Flat Abigail's pictures:
Australian Aborigines Aboriginal Australians) are a class of people who are identified by Australian law as being members of a race indigenous to the Australian continent.
In the High Court of Australia, Australian Aborigines have been specifically identified as a group of people who share, in common, biological ancestry back to the original occupants of the continent.
The didgeridoo (is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia at least 1,500 years ago and is still in widespread usage today both in Australia and around the world. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or "drone pipe". Musicologists classify it as an aerophone. The instrument is traditionally made from Eucalyptus trees which have had their interiors hollowed out by termites or died of other causes.
There are no reliable sources stating the didgeridoo's exact age, though it is commonly claimed to be the world's oldest wind instrument. Archaeological studies of rock art in Northern Australia suggests that the Aboriginal people of the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory have been using the didgeridoo for at least 1,500 years, based on the dating of paintings on cave walls and shelters from this period. A clear rock painting in Ginga Wardelirrhmeng, on the northern edge of the Arnhem Land plateau, from the freshwater period shows a didgeridoo player and two songmen participating in an Ubarr Ceremony.
A modern didgeridoo is usually cylindrical or conical, and can measure anywhere from 1 to 3m (3 to 10ft) long. Most are around 1.2m (4ft) long. The length is directly related to the 1/2 sound wavelength of the keynote. Generally, the longer the instrument, the lower the pitch or key of the instrument.

  56. Flat Abigail and the Sydney Harbor Bridge:
The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel through arch bridge across Sydney Harbour that carries rail, vehicle and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district (CBD) and the North Shore. The dramatic view of the bridge, the harbour, and the nearby Sydney Opera House is an iconic image of both Sydney and Australia. The bridge is locally nicknamed "The Coathanger" because of its arch-based design.
The bridge was designed and built by Dorman Long and Co Ltd, Middlesbrough Teesside and Cleveland Bridge, Darlington, County Durham and opened in 1932. Until 1967 it was the city's tallest structure According to Guinness World Records, it is the world's widest long-span bridge and it is the tallest steel arch bridge, measuring 134 metres (440 ft) from top to water level. It is also the fifth-longest spanning-arch bridge in the world.

Flat Jamie was most impressed. Today was bittersweet though as it was my last day with Flat Jamie. I passed her on to the real Jamie's Grandma, I can't wait to hear about the places she will see! 71. Hi Jamie and Class,
I can't figure out what happened to my blog about my trip to Las Vegas, Nevada so I decided to write another one. Thanks for letting me take Flat Jamie with me on my trip. She was very good company and enjoyed the trip as much as I did. The airplane ride was a lot of fun since we got to travel in first class. We watched a movie, ate breakfast and took a nap during our 5 hr. flight so the time went by pretty fast.

When we got to Las Vegas we checked in to the Paris Hotel. It was beautiful and just like being in France. Flat Jamie loved the comfortable queen size bed she got to sleep in. We had lots of fun visiting all the great hotels on the strip and saw some great shows too. There was so much to see and do. At one of the hotels we saw a volcano erupt and at another fountains that danced to music. We even took a ride up to the top of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel where we were staying. We could see all of Las Vegas and the Red Canyons in the distance. The Eiffel Tower is an exact relica of the real one in France only it is scaled down to half the size. It was very windy one day while we were there and they had a dust alert because Las Vegas is in the desert. Luckily it didn't ruin our vacation because all the tall buildings blocked the dust.

We really had a great trip. I hope your class got the post card I sent you. I took some pictures of Flat Jamie's adventures so you can post them on your bulletin board in your classroom. I will be sending Flat Jamie back to Reading this week when your father comes to visit me. I will miss her but I will be coming to MA to visit you both very soon.

  74. Hello from Vermont!
When Flat Adam came to visit me, I gave him some Ben and Jerry’s chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, made in Vermont and told him a story about our history here in Bennington while he rested up.
A long time ago during the American Revolution, the British army tried to crush the American colonist’s hopes to govern themselves. Their strategy was to come down from Canada through what is now Vermont to cut New England off from the rest of the colonies and capture Albany, the capital of New York. They thought we were easy pickings, being a bunch farmers and untrained militia. Things were going as planned for the British troops until they found themselves running out of supplies and decided to send an expeditionary force to our small town of Bennington to capture a storehouse where our Bennington Monument now stands. Well, we surprised those invaders when General John Stark rallied our local men to march on the approaching invaders. We gave them a licking and weakened the British enough that they lost at the Battle of Saratoga a few months later. That was the turning point in the Revolution and we were able to organize ourselves into the United States of America. I took Flat Adam to visit the Bennington Monument and the statue of General Stark. I had to hold on tight to him when we got to the top because the windows were open and even though there are bars, he almost slipped through. It’s a long drop down!!!
Have fun on your next journey!

  77. Flat Adam arrives in Southern California!
He came to visit his cousins in Orange County, home of Disneyland, Laguna Beach and home of the Anaheim Angels. His trip had to be a quick one so that he could return home before the school year ends. He had a wonderful day playing with his cousins in the trampoline. The nicknamed Flat Adam "Springs" because he could jump so high. Then it was a spin around the neighborhood on an Indian Motorcycle. After lunch, we visited and told Flat Adam about the great places to visit and neat things to see that California has to offer. Then we took him to shred it up at the skaeboard park and Flat Adam even did an 'Ollie' off the half pipe. All the kids said it was sick! (I think that meaans it was awesome.) We followed it all up with a dip in the water where Flat Adam rode a Boogie Board. He was exhausted by the end of the day. We thought he would sit down with us and watch the LA Lakers play the Boston Celtics for the National Championship, but he didn't want any part of us in our purple and gold clothing. He said, "I'm outta here an heading home to be with the real fans!" So we gave him a high five, wished him luck on his travels and sent him on his way. We are going to miss that little guy. Love, The Kimballs
